November 10, 2007. Hello fellow Mush Larose members.
Thanks for making the October dryland race a success! We now have 54 paid members and about $1200 profit from the race. Please remember to show your gratitude to the sponsors in person when you are in their stores.
Upcoming Events
We’ve have been putting together a list of events for Mush Larose this season, starting small with one event a month. So here is the tentative mini-schedule:
25 November 07 - 9 am – 6 km scooter race 1&2-dog, 2 km 4-dog cart race and open 1/4 mile dash. This is a simple members event: timed runs, bragging rights only, no toilet, no food or water, lunch at Baboul’s for those who are interested (Questions? Tim Van Der Meer: )
15 December 07 - 10 am - Passing clinic and training run
5 January 08 - 10 am - Skijor clinic and training run
10 February 08 - 9 am - Alaskan Malamute Help League Race (Questions? Heather Adeney: )
2 March 08 - 10 am - Poker run / End of Season Meeting
For other local events also of interest: see Anne’s training division schedule at < www.geocities.com/Heartland/Flats/2735/schedule.htm >. Very locally there is also the Kemptville race February 2/3. We will likely be asked to do a demo at the Limoges Winterfest, though I do not have a specific date yet, it is sometime in February.
Members wanting to coordinate for trips up to the forest are welcome to post their plans on the www.skidogs.ca forum. Register as a ‘skidogs’ member at the top of the forum page to post forum comments.
Hunting Season in the forest
5 Nov - 31 Dec - Archery
5–18 November - shotgun and muzzle-loading gun
3–9 December - muzzle-loading guns
If you go up for a run when guns are being used, please take care! Wear bright colours and bells to alert any hunters who may be around.
Trail news
We spoke with Nicholas Gautier, who is responsible for trail grooming at Larose. He tells us he will be happy to groom the full area around the parking lot used for the fall race with the extra loop for the AMHL race; the Mush Larose trail leading to the east including the loop that leads past the gun club; and the loop that goes east from that past the fire tower ruins (the Lacelle Loop). This is somewhere in the neighborhood of 20 kms of trails. Yay Nicholas!
We also discussed putting in a couple of bridges to allow for a race course of 7 km without head-on passing, so we are hoping that this can be addressed by a work party next fall with assistance from the forestry people. Plans to be posted at a later date.
We confirmed that we are legal to travel on any of the forest trails with the exception of the cross-country ski trail. Keep your eye out for motorized vehicles, and enjoy the longer forest trails if the dog sled only trails start to get a little dry! A preliminary map of the full forest trails, GPS rendered by the ATV club, will be available at club events.
Please post any trail issues you cannot fix yourself (eg. missing signage, tree down) on www.skidogs.ca <http://www.skidogs.ca> in the trail conditions section of the forum or email and we’ll try to get it fixed.
Volunteer List
Anyone who is willing to volunteer for trail maintenance please let us know what skills/equipment you can offer: email . At the moment we only anticipate tree clearing, signage replacement and special project help, like the trail bridges.
Thanks to Tim Van Der Meer, for volunteering himself to help out with the club executive. With his background in project coordination we have happily accepted him in the position of Events Coordinator.
Feedback? Questions? Event ideas? Don’t want to receive these updates? Email: .
Looking forward to seeing interested members on November 25th at the parking lot!
